Thomas Duty III

M.S.
Teaching Instructor

Biography

Thomas Duty is a Teaching Instructor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at East Carolina University and a proud Pirate alumnus, having earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ECU. A native of Jacksonville, North Carolina, he began his law enforcement career in 2014 with the Emerald Isle Police Department, where he specialized in impaired driving enforcement, crisis intervention, and suicide investigations while earning advanced certifications through both the department and the North Carolina Justice Academy.

An off-duty boating accident in 2016 resulted in a cervical spinal cord injury that redirected his career but never diminished his commitment to public service. The experience transformed his perspective on resilience. To Thomas, resilience is not simply about overcoming adversity. It is about allowing difficult experiences to shape character, strengthen purpose, and deepen understanding of others. Living with paralysis has made him a more thoughtful educator, a more focused professional, and a more determined individual.

Today, Thomas brings both his law enforcement experience and his personal journey into the classroom, helping students understand that accountability, fairness, and integrity are not just abstract principles, but choices people make every day, especially when circumstances are difficult.
