We Are

ECU Pirates

Working Smarter, For Better.

East Carolina University® has never waited for the world to come to it. Since 1907, ECU® has gone wherever it’s needed — and for working adults who need a degree on their own terms, that means meeting you exactly where you are.

Living up to the promise.

What started as a practical institution built to serve eastern North Carolina has grown into a nationally recognized research university with more than 29,000 students and one guiding purpose: to serve. That’s more than a tagline. It’s why ECU was founded and it still shapes who we are today.

From the beginning, ECU has attracted determined people who worked hard for every opportunity. That same spirit drives the working adults who choose ECU Online. Long before online learning became common, ECU was among the first universities in the nation to offer degrees entirely over the internet and among the first to develop a master’s degree specifically built for online delivery.

Today, more than 5,000 students are earning their degrees 100% online through flexible, asynchronous programs designed to fit real life. Flight Path programs (what we call our degree completion suite) help you build on the college credit you’ve already earned, not start over. You’ll learn from the same faculty, meet the same academic standards and earn the same respected ECU degree as on-campus students. This is still ECU: regionally accredited, nationally ranked and held to the same academic standards as every degree that leaves this campus.

And you won’t do it alone. From dedicated enrollment support to advisors who understand adult learners, ECU is committed to helping you keep moving forward. Because at ECU, serving students doesn’t end when you’re admitted. You’re not a number here. You’re a Pirate, and ECU shows up for its own.

For the bold. For the driven. For the ones who work smarter because they know what it’s for.

THE ADVENTUROUS LIFE OF AN ECU PIRATE

“When I decided to return to school I was reluctant to take [online] classes. I was worried I would be ‘alone’ in the process. That is just not the case at ECU. ECU’s degree completion program changed my life.”

Christopher Foote

A Different Kind of Treasure

At ECU, success isn’t measured by what you collect. It’s measured by the lives you change. We have spent more than a century putting students and communities first, and these recognitions reflect the impact of an education built to serve.

Helping North Carolinians Finish What They Started

More than 1 million North Carolinians have some college credit but no degree. That’s not just a statistic — it’s the reason Flight Path exists.

Flight Path is our approach to degree completion, built for adults who are ready to move forward without starting over. These programs are designed to help you apply what you’ve already earned, follow a clear path to graduation and stay on track with flexible online coursework and dedicated support. It’s a model built around progress, giving you the structure and guidance to finish what you started and move toward what’s next.

What Makes the Flight Path Format Different

Maximize Your Transfer Credits

Not all programs accept transfer credits, let alone large amounts. Flight Path programs are built assuming you have accomplished a lot. Apply what you’ve earned and move forward from where you left off.

Completion With a Clear Outcome

This isn’t about checking a box. Every program is designed around workforce demand, so you develop in-demand skills, receive clear direction and are prepared for whatever comes next.

Proactive, Start-to-Finish Support

While many online programs offer support when you ask for it, we take a more proactive approach. Regular check-ins, clear next steps and ongoing outreach provide the structure and support you need to keep moving.
