Grants
Grants are funds that do not require repayment. Grants are generally awarded to students with the greatest financial need, which is determined by completion of the
FAFSA
. ECU’s Federal School Code is 002923.
Pell Grant
Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduate students with no prior bachelor’s degree with significant financial need, as measured by the Department of Education’s need-analysis formula that measures a family’s ability to pay for education expenses. A student may receive a Federal Pell Grant for a maximum of six years.
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
SEOG is awarded to students with exceptional financial need. Priority is given to recipients of the Pell Grant. The amount you are awarded will vary depending on your financial need, when you apply, the amount of other aid you are receiving, and funding availability at ECU.
Iraq & Afghanistan Service Grant
The Iraq & Afghanistan Service Grant is awarded to students whose parent or guardian was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces and died as a result of military service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan after 9/11. In addition, students must be 24 years old or younger and enrolled in college at the time of their parent or guardian’s death.
ECU Grant (ECUG)
ECUG is awarded to full-time undergraduate students with no previous bachelor’s degree who have an expected family contribution from $0-$11,000. The amount you are awarded will vary depending on your financial need, when you apply, the amount of other aid you are receiving, and funding availability at ECU.
North Carolina Scholarship (NCS)
NCS is a state grant awarded to undergraduate North Carolina residents based on the completion of their FAFSA, need, and funding availability. Recipients are chosen by the College Foundation of North Carolina.
Other Resident State Grant Programs
If you are an out-of-state student, you will need to check with your home state’s Department of Higher Education to determine if you qualify for funding to assist you in attending ECU.
Direct Federal Loans
The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loan Program) is a low-interest loan program provided by the U.S. Department of Education that allows eligible students and parents to borrow money to assist with educational expenses. The Direct Loan Program consists of the Direct Stafford Loan, Direct Parent PLUS Loan, and the Direct Graduate PLUS Loan.
Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan
Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans are awarded only to eligible undergraduate students based on financial need. Interest is paid by the U.S. Department of Education as long as the student is
enrolled at least half-time at ECU.
Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans are awarded to eligible undergraduate, graduate, professional, medical, and dental students regardless of financial need. Interest begins accruing from the date of disbursement. However, students who decide to make interest payments while in school can avoid capitalization of interest. When interest is capitalized, it is added to the principal amount of the loan.
Direct Parent PLUS Loan
If you are a dependent undergraduate student, your biological or adoptive parent (or in some cases, your stepparent) may apply for a Direct Parent PLUS Loan. Grandparents (unless they have legally adopted you) and legal guardians are not eligible to apply for a Parent PLUS Loan on your behalf. The maximum amount a parent can borrow is based on your estimated cost of attendance (COA) minus other financial aid received for the academic year.
Direct Graduate PLUS Loan
The Direct Graduate PLUS Loan Program is a federal loan program that provides financial assistance to graduate or professional students who have borrowed Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans up to their academic year limit. The maximum amount you can borrow is based on your estimated cost of attendance (COA) minus other financial aid received for the academic year.
